Abstract

The inability of the public authorities to solve the problems of the Beninese school pushes international NGOs of a humanitarian and non-profit nature to intervene to supplement the efforts of the State in certain underprivileged areas. What are the strategies developed by the NGO Bornefonden to keep students in secondary schools in the municipality of Bassila from 1996 to 2016?

The sources and bibliographic resources consulted to answer this question offer a harvest supplemented by information from semi-structured interviews carried out and subjected to quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques. The results obtained allow us to say that in twenty years of activity, Bornefonden has managed to keep 3,651 students in secondary schools in the municipality. Although minimal, the material and financial contributions of the NGO have been decisive in the operation of the establishments that have received these sponsored learners. Thanks to income-generating activities, the enrolled households regained the financial balance required to support themselves at the end of the program's stay.
